Council chiefs finally apologise over monument marketing disaster

22nd August 2019

Council bosses have finally apologised after visitors to Southport complained about a new car promotion which was allowed to be sited within the town’s Lord Street war memorial area.

The display consisted of three Kia SUV vehicles which were parked on the pavement area around the memorial site between the Obelisk and one of the colonnades on Friday, August 16.

The vehicles were moved to a ‘more suitable location’ later that day following complaints from members of the public both to the car dealership, Chapelhouse, and Sefton Council.

The council has now ‘apologised for any distress the event may have caused’ and conceded that ‘in hindsight this was not a good use for this area given its social and historical relevance’.
