Conservative candidate for Dukes Ward, Michael Prendergast, says actions not words are needed when it comes to Southport’s town centre economy.
Highlighting a wave of recent comments from Liberal Democrat Councillor Tony Dawson, Michael said: “The Liberal Democrats have had a lot to say in the press in recent weeks, but much of it without real strategy or substance.
‘Our town centre is not unique in struggling to compete against online retailers and major cities. The empty shops along the once bustling Lord Street are testament to that and the ruling Labour Party in Sefton has made sure that any significant investments made by the council, have not benefited Southport.
“But what Southport needs is a coherent strategy for what it wants to be. Simply saying that there is too much retail space and it should be converted to other uses is just stating the obvious, and words alone won’t solve anything.
“Our councillors should be engaging with private investors to encourage them to develop the empty units on Lord Street, working with the council officers to secure planning and encouraging the council to issue parking permits to anyone who buys a property in the town centre too.
We need elected representatives who understand how businesses operate, recognise what the private sector needs to generate growth and have a clear set of actions to achieve it. I’m sure I’m not the only one getting tired of the very negative standpoint, when we should be focusing on actions, not just words. ‘
