‘Bijou’ Community Cinema Approved
Sefton Council has today (June 30) granted Planning Permission for a change of use of the former Latin Lounge restaurant in Southport to an independent cinema and cafe.
The building, located on Post Office Avenue, is adjacent to the Sainsbury’s superstore in Southport town centre and is part of the Lord Street Conservation area. It has been vacant for the past year.
The plans will turn the site into an independent community ‘Bijou’ cinema and café and will bring back into use a historic building located in a key part of Southport town centre.
Cllr Daren Veidman, Cabinet Member for Planning and Building Control, said: “This is a really unique and exciting proposition that has the potential to greatly add to the vitality and vibrancy of Southport town centre.
“It offers something very different to the conventional multi-screen cinema approach we already have in town.
“Located within the heart of the town centre, it has many advantages which will hopefully encourage customers to this establishment, but also lead to spin off benefits and linked trips to other nearby businesses.
“I look forward to seeing this project realised, and wish the independent community cinema the best of luck in the conversion of this building.”
