College students get wet on Southport training day

Wigan & Leigh College  second year Pre-Degree Nursing students spent a morning training with volunteers from Southport Offshore Rescue Trust (Southport Lifeboat). They completed a number of casualty recovery tasks from the water to the lifeboat and triaging casualties in a mock up BBQ explosion on land. Whilst on water, students took turns to prioritise casualties and recover them to the boat in order of severity of conditions whilst maintaining their own safety and that of the crew.

The land based tasks involved dealing with realistic injuries including catastrophic haemorrhaging, spinal injuries, unconscious breathing casualties and broken limbs.

Feedback from the crew was that the students demonstrated excellent knowledge, skills and casualty care throughout all tasks.

The Health and Social Care Department would like to give a massive thank you to all the volunteers who gave up time to enable our students to experience a morning with the lifeboat Crew.
