Closed Botanic Gardens bird house issue plea for used newspapers

5th March 2025

Used or discarded newspapers are desperately needed by the volunteers and staff who run the Botanic Gardens Aviary.

The team say they are in need of donations of old and discarded newspapers which go into the aviary cages to help manage the amount of bird mess generated by the parks’ flock.

The council closed the Aviary last month and it remains shut to the public due to a nationwide bird flu warning.

While the birds are getting some respite from their human admirers, their homes still need regular cleaning and maintenance.

An aviary spokesperson said “we have put a box outside the gate nearest the park entrance of the aviary as a way for people to donate newspapers in a waterproof space.

“We would really appreciate any old newspapers, as we are currently running low. Thank you for your support of the aviary; we hope to see you again soon!”
