Cancer charity launch anti obesity campaign in Southport

29th September 2018

A new initiative which seeks to raise awareness of the link between obesity and cancer was launched in Southport last week.

The national charity Cancer Research UK has started a poster campaign around the North West after their latest report found that being overweight or obese as an adult increases the risk of 13 different types of cancer including breast, bowel and kidney cancer.

Now they have renewed their call for government action, particularly on ‘junk food’ advertising to children and price promotions on ‘unhealthy’ foods in supermarkets.

According to the figures, obesity is set to overtake smoking as the biggest pre- ventable cause of cancer among women in the UK in the next 25 years. In the North West, 58% of women are overweight or obese, while 15% smoke.

Obesity has a greater effect on women, even though more men are overweight or obese. This is because some of the most common obesity- related cancers – such as breast and womb cancers predominantly affect women.
