Many believe they are an ‘accident waiting to happen’

Furious residents have been given a chance to vent about ‘dangerous’ cycle lanes in Southport Town centre.

A meeting of the council’s licensing committee took place last night to formally note a series of objections to the controversial cycle lane scheme that runs like a vein through the town centre.

The most controversial section of the cycle lane scheme is on Queens Road and Hoghton Street.

The Hoghton Street stretch (pictured in a file photo above with Cllr Mike Prendergast and businessman Sinclair D’Albuquerque) has been the subject of repeated debate and campaigning since it was first installed.

It also features heavily in a number of campaign manifestos for candidates in the upcoming parliamentary election for the town.

Objectors have branded the infrastructure as a ‘nightmare’ and ‘dangerous’ with others going on record to warn of potential accidents happening because of the council scheme.

One objection read: “This lane was created initially very quickly without proper forethought or planning or any meaningful community involvement.

“Anyone who actually lives in the area would tell you it was not and is not required.”

Despite the concerns raised there is expected to be no changes to the Hoghton Street section of the scheme.
