Prisoners should be used to clear the grass on Southport beach.
That’s the bizarre claim by campaigners who say that overcrowded prisons in the area, such as Walton and Kirkham, should instead ‘loan out’ prisoners on lesser sentences to cut and pull up all the grass on Southport beach.
The ever growing grass, known as marram grass, is slowly taking over both sides of the beach next to Southport Pier and shows no signs of stopping, destroying the once golden sands Southport was famous for.
Now the beach looks a mess and campaigners say enough is enough. One said “what about the Army? Or even using prisoners. Our Prisons are full so right there’s thats the labour sorted.
“it is our town and yours too so get behind us and get it fixed.”
