A campaigning councillor has called for private property owners and Sefton Council to use vacant land to provided much-needed additional car parking spaces in Southport town centre.
Cllr David Barton, who represents Dukes Ward, said that the move would attract more shoppers and boost the local retail economy.
He said one example of vacant land which would fit the bill was the site at West Street near the Wayfarers Arcade.
He said: “Despite being in need of some maintenance this would form an ideal location for both local residents and visitors to the surrounding shopping area encompassing Lord Street and is an opportunity to provide a secure a car parking space at a reasonable charge.”
Cllr Barton said other benefits from providing additional car parking would include improved air quality through the reduced number of motorists driving around searching for a space.
He said: “Reports from retailers are that shoppers and visitors have not returned to the town because of the difficulties in finding somewhere to park
“Quiet town centre side streets could provide discreet car parking, preserving the openness of both surrounding Lord Street and The Promenade conservation areas and in close proximity to the high street itself, which will naturally encourage the reoccupation of the present empty units with high-quality bespoke boutiques again.”
“Having undertaken a Town Survey in 2016 with all the businesses on Lord Street, 98% said their chief concern was the offer of cost-effective and close-by car parking
“I believe this can be possible through the joint cooperation of private property owners and incentives provided by Sefton Council, such as a percentage reduction in their business rates.
“I am actively encouraging anyone who may be interested to get in touch as soon as possible to outline if and where possible this may be done appropriately with respect to the surrounding neighbourhood.
“I am already in discussions with several businesspeople as to this proposal becoming a reality in Southport and welcome all and any support that may be granted from the Local Authority as we ultimately seek to put Southport truly back on the retail map.”
