Call for action over SOUTHPORT pothole problems

7th March 2018

A call by Liberal Democrats for an extra £400,000 to be invested over the next year in dealing with potholes in local roads has been turned down.

The amendment was put forward by Lib Dem leader councillor John Pugh at last week’s Budget Meeting of Sefton Council, but was defeated by the Council’s Labour majority.

Cllr Pugh commented: “The case for action now is self-evident as the Council could face legitimate claims from motorists who have suspensions damaged by the huge craters opening up. In places, including many of Southport’s main roads, we are down to the cobbles.”

“The Labour-controlled Council managed to find £32 million for the purchase of Bootle’s New Strand Shopping Centre. They’ve put up Council Tax by 6% from next month, so it’s unreasonable to say they can do nothing.”

“My proposal would not have added a penny to council tax bills, but would have shown that the Council was responsive to residents’ concerns. It is deeply disappointing that it was opposed by the other parties.”
