Bypass traffic grinds to halt after van smash

Traffic between Formby and Hightown has backed up after a crash on a busy junction this morning.

Emergency services were called to the Red Squirrel junction on the Formby bypass just before 8am after an incident involving a transit van.

Both police and fire crews were called to the scene and have closed a northbound lane at the bush interchange, causing traffic to back up or be diverted.

The incident means many commuters are facing long delays getting to work including both bus passengers and motorists.

Police remain on scene along with fire crews from Merseyside Fire & Rescue.

An update into the cause of the incident is expected later.
