Mental health is one of the most underrated topics for many years, and it is good to know that many people are already promoting mental health awareness. Mental health is just as important as physical and emotional health.

DEFINITION OF MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health encompasses psychological and social healthiness. It influences a person’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. Our threshold for stress, relationship with other people, and decision-making are related to mental health. From childhood to adulthood, there are contributory factors to issues in mental health. There are biological factors which include DNA, various life encounters, and genetics or bloodline of the family having mental health concerns.

The danger with mental health problems is that most of the time, nobody notices them. A family member, friend, or a stranger beside you may be suffering from mental health illness but masked by their smiles or strong image. These people bear these problems but not all have undergone treatment or management because of the negative stigma connected to mental health, discrimination, and inability to afford the treatment. If left untreated, mental health problems can result in more expensive treatments and distracted performance in the basic life demands.

There are two types of mental health problems, such as Anxiety Disorders. Anxiety orders are often a connection to previous bad experiences. 18 percent of adults suffer from anxiety disorder annually. An example of Anxiety Disorder is phobia and post-traumatic stress disorder. Being OC or obsessive-compulsive also falls in this category. Next, we have mood disorders. An example is depression.

We have to admit that the universal view of mental health and disorder is better nowadays compared to the past days, but discrimination connected to it is still influential because of social media and being misinformed or underinformed. These are the reasons why many individuals with mental illness refuse to seek help and avail; proper treatment because of the negative stigmas. They struggle to experience acceptance and respect.

People with mental health disorders are rampant yet they tend to mask their conditions since they didn’t want to be judged. They can improve and completely recover with the right help. We must also be keen observers to know who needs help. There are early warning signs like a change of appetite and sleeping pattern, withdrawal from social activities and other things the person usually does, lack of energy, being apathetic, having mysterious physical disorders, being and vulnerable, resorting to vices, mood swings, character change, hallucinations, memories, and thoughts dominating their head, violence on self and others, and incapacity to take care of family and self.

Should these signs be apparent, know where to find help. Those who have disorders must have the treatment. Everyone must have positive mental health.

Why Positive Mental Health Matters

When people have positive mental health, they can fulfill their optimum potential, handle internal and external pressures, are dynamic in their work, and contribute significantly to society.

To achieve these, an individual must have healthy holistic living.

Physical: Eat healthy foods, avoid health-damaging habits like drinking, smoking, drug dependency, and eating too much. Exercise for at least 15 minutes daily. Sleep adequate hours.

Psychological: Think positive at all times. Avoid stressful situations and toxic people. Surround yourself with positive people who bring out the best in you. Develop coping and survival skills.
