Brexit hopes fade as Labour reproach government for failing to move

5th April 2019

Labour’s Tom Watson said about 80% of Labour MPs backed a so-called “confirmatory ballot”. A public vote on any Brexit deal could “solve the national crisis” in the UK, Labour’s deputy leader has said.

PM Theresa May announced earlier this week that she wanted to hold discussions with Jeremy Corbyn in order to find a proposal to put to MPs ahead of an emergency EU summit on 10 April.

Talks between Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May will allegedly break down if Labour insists on putting any conciliation deal to a confirmatory referendum, government sources have alleged.

Mr Watson suggested Labour MPs would find it “a bit difficult” to accept any conclusion, which omitted a referendum option.

Last March Britain’s equality watchdog has said it believes Labour may have “unlawfully discriminated against people because of their ethnicity and religious beliefs” as it proclaimed the first step of a statutory investigation into the party’s handling of antisemitism complaints.

The party said it would cooperate with the regulator, whereas its fondly regarded and charismatic deputy leader, Tom Watson, called on party officials to ensure no emails or records were deleted.
