Brave David passes away after lifelong battle to oust Southport paedophile culture

21st May 2019

Tributes have been paid to a much loved Southport man who passed away following a short battle with illness earlier today.

David Ellis, who was terminally ill with cancer was cared for by kind hearted staff at The Willows Home in Birkdale where he saw out his final days.

His close friend and author Phil Frampton led tributes to Dave. Phil said “David’s express wish was that I let your readers know how wonderful he considers the staff and care to be at The Willows.

David and I grew up just a few hundred yards away in the Barnardo’s Home on Beach Road during the 1960s.

David was one of several children who sacrificed their youth trying to fight the paedophile manager of the home who died without Barnardo’s or the Police ever prosecuting him. They have since accepted that the manager sexually and physically abused many of the children in our home.

The story of their heroism is recounted in my childhood memoir, The Golly in the Cupboard, which Barnardo’s welcomed when it was published in 2004.

He also featured in the 2005 award winning BBC Merseyside Radio documentary of the same name. Never bitter about his maltreatment, David, who had attended Birkdale Secondary Modern school, spent most of his life in Southport and built up a good business for himself.

David was thankful to life and all those in his life. it is fitting that in the midst of his last battle he once again is thinking of those around him.”
