Bootle Rule Over Southport Continues

17th May 2019

The One Party Labour Rule from Bootle over Southport and Formby continues after Sefton Council’s Annual General Meeting last night.

The Labour majority on Sefton Council voted through the same set of Council bosses as were in charge last year. Councillor Iain Maher is Leader of the Council while Councillor John Fairclough (above) continues as his deputy.
The nine member ‘Cabinet’ consists of Councillor Maher’s hand-picked councillors who each get about £25.000 per year on top of their ‘day job’ salaries and meet in public for five minutes or so every fortnight to nod through decisions.
Although Southport is by some measure the largest community in the Borough of Sefton, all ten of the ruling Cabinet members are from the South of the Borough, being nearly all Bootle councillors. This has been the way Southport has been ruled since Labour took control of the Council seven years ago.
