Birkdale Park Nursing Home Holds its D Day 75 Anniversary Veterans’ Parade

Birkdale Park Nursing Home in Southport held its D Day parade and commemoration of the 75 Anniversary of the greatest amphibious landing in history. To celebrate the actions and sacrifice of the men and women Birkdale Park held its own Veterans’ Parade. Led by Registered Manager Retired Major Jonathan Cunningham MBE former Yorkshire Regiment (The Green Howards) he read out several passage and accounts of that historic day finally recounting General Montgomery’s final address to the troops on the eve of battle. Birkdale Park prides its self on its veterans and ensuring they enjoy everyday. At Birkdale Park a weekly parade is held, war songs are sung and the Union Jack raised to ‘God Save the Queen’.

Staff Sergeant James Highton who served in the Kings Liverpool Regiment said ‘My Father served in the war. I recall him coming home’ There was no other Regiment to join when I joined up for National Service.’

The veterans parade left to right veterans comprised:

-Peter Redmond (Army Royal Signals)

-Ken Hope (RAF)

-James Highton (Army Kings Liverpool Regiment) – Standing

-Ken Farr (Merchant Navy)

-Jonathan Cunningham (Army – Yorkshire Regiment) – Saluting

-Albert Wrigley (Navy)
