Southport is stepping into summer with this year’s planters now out and about accross the town centre. Over 5,000 flowers are filling barrier baskets, hanging baskets and spectacular three tier planting displays. The roundabouts are also set for a make over in the coming days, all funded by Southport BID levy funds.
Southport in Bloom is thanks to a partnership that has been established between Southport BID (Business Improvement District) and the Lord Street volunteers. Southport BID provides around 7,500 bedding plants, which are grown by local nursery J & A Horticulture and then planted in hanging basked and container displays across the town by the Lord Street volunteers.
By summer thanks to this project Southport will be a blaze of colour, with thousands of busy lizzies, begonias and many more helping to give a horticultural hello to visitors and enhancing the place that local people live and work.
Hugh Evans, Chief Executive of Southport BID, says, “This is a really important project for us for the partnership work that it involves and the fact that the results can be enjoyed by everyone. The BID represents local restaurants, retailers and those in the hospitality industry, and it is important to them that we are a coastal town that looks its very best, which the vibrant plants certainly help with. We also extend our thanks to the Lord Street volunteers for their dedication and expertise, which is invaluable.”
The spring planting scheme is one of the projects that Southport BID plans to further enhance if it is successful in securing a second term. Its current term concludes this year, and local businesses that are part of the BID are voting now to decide if the BID will return. Last postal date is Friday, with results announced.
