Veterans in Southport say they are heartbroken after a hugely popular respite centre for armed forces personnel and their families was shut down just weeks after a poignant remembrance service in the town.
Byng House has been closed down by penny pushing accountants who decided the holiday home was not financially viable any more.
The Royal British Legion’s director general, Charles Byrne, said: “The community we serve and our supporters deserve the very best from us, and it is our responsibility to ensure the Legion is providing relevant services that meet the needs of today’s Armed Forces community, and that the generous donations given to us by the public are used in the most impactful way.

Mrs Barbara Rodwell is delighted with the safety rail at her home address that was provided by Bing house.
The rail was provided to help Barbara when pottering around her garden which she still enjoys.
Barbara has also been offered 2 weeks respite at Byng House located on the promenade Southport. Barbara was over the moon when receiving the news in the post.
Barbra was given this great opportunity as she served in the Armed forces. Barbara was in the ATS she served in Scotland in 1944 for 2 years.
At Byng House guests are never at a loose end for things to do, with entertainment every night and day trips around the town. All food and drinks are provided which means no cooking for Barbara for a couple of weeks!
Barbara will be given 5 star care with comfy surroundings which will be very beneficial for her as she lives alone and is 88 years old.
Barbara’s family would like to thank all at Byng house for this wonderful opportunity for Barbara, it has been a tough year for her as she has just recently lost her son and deserves this break.
