A Southport golfer who found a love of the game thanks to his grandad is set to shine at the upcoming Cazoo Classic in Hillside.
Resort golfer Matthew Baldwin is widely regarded as a huge talent and is expected to do very well at the tournament in the coming days.
Baldwin splits his time between the European Tour and Challenge Tour, which he first graduated from in 2011 courtesy of his win at the Fred Olsen Challenge de España.
Matthew started playing golf aged three when his grandfather took him to a local field to hit balls. He also played for England Boys for two years, and was part of the Great Britain and Ireland team which won the Jacques Léglise Trophy in 2004.
However golf fans wont see the town’s prodigal son Tommy Fleetwood grace the competition, despite it being held in his home town.
Fleetwood has been making headlines across the golfing world in recent weeks amid lots of speculation he could join a controversial breakaway Saudi backed golf tournament.
But this week it was reported that Tommy Fleetwood, 31, will not be joining the LIV Golf breakaway tour amid frenzied speculation about who will be next to sign up for the Saudi-backed series.
The first official practice day of the 2022 Hillside Cazoo Classic begins on Wednesday before the tournament starts on Thursday.
