Back in time at Burscough Heritage Weekend – 24 to 25 June

Burscough’s Heritage Weekend will take place this Saturday and Sunday, featuring the popular annual raft race.

Throughout the weekend, canal history walks will run from the interpretation board at the front of the Wharf, whilst in the courtyard, entertainment will include performances from ukulele band, Ukes at the Wharf, and Morris dancers, Stone the Crows.

Displays will feature vintage vehicles, motorbikes and a miniature steam engine, along with range of stalls selling local produce including; plants from Burscough Allotment Society; honey and an observation hive from The Tree Bee Society (Burscough); driftwood art; and home-made jams and chutneys.

The Burscough Heritage Group will also have a display showing local artefacts. On Sunday, the annual Charity Raft Race will start at 2pm running from The Slipway to The Wharf; speaking about the race, Burscough Wharf site manager, Ray Eckersley said: “The raft race has now become quite a tradition in Burscough. This year we have the biggest number of raft entries, we’re expecting a host of impressive creations which should make for a great spectacle.”

In the Arts Centre, photographic exhibition, Images of Burscough, by Mike Dawson will feature old photographs of Burscough and surrounding areas. Ray added: “This year we’re also welcoming History Group displays, vintage transport models, as well as traditional lacemaking and sewing displays.”

Resident photographer at the Wharf, Fat Badger, will be offering visitors the opportunity to dress up in traditional clothes worn by the barge families, and have old-fashioned photographs taken.
