Residents in Southport will receive an important letter in the coming days about making sure they are eligible to vote in this year’s elections.
The letter asks residents to check and – where necessary – update their details held on the electoral register and make sure that all eligible voters in their household are registered.
This will allow residents to vote in the General, Borough, Town and Parish Council elections taking place on Thursday 7 May 2015.
The way people register to vote changed in 2014 to a new system called Individual Electoral Registration (IER).
In the past, one person was responsible for registering everyone who lived in a household. Now, if you are registering for the first time or re-registering, you need to do it yourself. The new system also means that people are able to register online for the first time at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Sefton Council will also be separately contacting approximately 3,500 postal voters in the borough to provide a fresh signature for our records. This happens when a postal voter has not submitted a new application or updated their details for five years.
