Sefton Council is going to close Splashworld in Southport this Christmas with the facility being out of action for a whole 6 months while repairs take place. The closure, which Sefton view as unavoidable, has been described by Lib Dem parliamentary candidate, John Wright as “a body blow to the town”.
“It’s not only bad news for local families, it also one less reason for visitors to come to Southport. The effects will be felt in the cash tills of local shops as this is one lot our major attractions – particularly outside the summer season.”
The Dunes leisure centre itself will remain open including the sports hall which is used for the General Election Count, but other bits of the complex will be boarded off.
“I can’t help wondering whether Sefton have had a proper focus on this”, says John Wright. “This is a prime Southport attraction designed to attract a minimum of a 250,000 visitors a year. Other councils manage to keep their assets in good repair without dramatic closures. This is a relatively new facility!”.
