Former Southport FC forward Alex Russell passed away yesterday, the club’s Former Player’s Association has announced.
Russell made over 340 appearances for Southport in the Football League and was, according to the SFCPFA, a “bona fide club legend” and “perhaps the greatest player ever to play for Southport Football Club.”
Southport FC called him “one of our all-time Football League greats.”
He is the second club legend to pass away in the space of a week, following the tragic news that former manager Billy Bingham sadly died on Friday.
Alex Russell played in two promotion-winning seasons for Southport, including scoring the goal that clinched Southport’s fourth division championship in 1973.
He was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame in 2019, and also had spells at Tranmere, Blackburn and Crewe.
His son, also Alex Russell, is a former Southport FC coach.
Alex passed away on Sunday evening, aged 78.
