Aintree doctor shortlisted for national award

Dr Mark Griffiths, Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist for Clinical Health Psychology Services at Aintree University Hospital, has been shortlisted by the charity, Stroke Association, for a national honour.

Dr Griffiths, from Mossley Hill, is in line to win the Professional Excellence Award – a public facing prize that recognises individuals who provide exceptional stroke care, service development initiative and a drive to go above and beyond in their work.

Aintree’s doctor was nominated for his passion and commitment to ensure stroke patients and their families receive the correct emotional and psychological support, following stroke occurrence.

Dr Griffiths played a key role in the development of Liverpool’s Emotional Support Service and in the development of a new model of Early Supported Discharge care in Liverpool – both launched in September 2016 and have significantly improved the care that can be provided to stroke patients locally. The award nomination also recognises his wider work, in seeking to improve psychological care pathways for stroke survivors locally and regionally.

He said: “A stroke is a life changing event – it’s a leading cause of disability in the UK. It is the job of me and my team to support the individual and their family with this dramatic transition in lifestyle and I hope I can continue to make a difference.

“It is a real privilege to have been shortlisted by the Stroke Association for this award. To know that my work, with the support of my team and wider colleagues, is having a positive impact on the lives of others is a wonderful feeling. It also very much re-enforces my motivation to continue to do what I can, in seeking to develop better services for stroke survivors.”

The ceremony, Life After Stroke Awards, is being held at the Landmark Hotel in London.
