Ainsdale station has made the shortlist of 48 stations to compete to be crowned the country’s favourite railway station in the World Cup of Stations 2020.
The competition, run by the Rail Delivery Group and returning for its second year, will give the people of the Liverpool City Region a chance to cheer on their local station as it competes in the top-flight of social media polling.
Ainsdale will be battling it out in the North West heat with Crewe, Hindley and Wigan North Western to be crowned local champions.
Ainsdale is the most environmentally friendly station on the network after extensive renovations completed in 2018.
The previous booking office was demolished to make way for a new building, complete with solar panels, low energy LED lighting with smart controls and rainwater harvesting tanks to serve the toilet facilities.
The local community was involved from the outset to ensure that the station was exactly what the village needed, and views and issues raised were taken into account and presented as part of the proposed overall solution.
Last year Ainsdale station was awarded the CEEQUAL Exceptional Achievement Award, and most recently was Highly Commended in the Sustainable Development, Medium Station of the Year category at the National Rail Awards.
The World Cup of Stations competition will see 48 stations large and small representing each region of the country competing in a series of online polls starting on Monday 12 October. By Friday, the competition will have been whittled down to a final four with one of Britain’s 2,579 railway stations named the nation’s favourite on Friday evening.
Twitter polls will be live throughout the week on the Rail Delivery Group Twitter page – @RailDeliveryGrp, so be sure to head over and make your vote count!
