Ainsdale Pontins staff informed of permanent closure

3rd January 2024

Operational staff at Pontins in Ainsdale have today been informed that the site is to close permanently, OTS News understands.

Pontins’ owner Britannia Hotels confirmed the closure of its sister Prestatyn and Camber Sands sites in November of last year.

A statement on the Pontins website said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Pontins Southport Holiday Park. After assessing the future viability of the park, we have come to the difficult decision to close our doors. Unfortunately, this means that Pontins Southport Holiday Park will be closing from Wednesday 3rd January 2024. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

A number of staff took to social media to say they had been told they had lost their jobs by text message. Landowner Sefton Council said it was not warned in advance about the closure.

The site was scheduled to host a range of ‘Weekender’ events until September. One event organiser, RaveKidz, said it had been emailed by Pontins about the closure.

The Pontins website was continuing to accept bookings for Southport several hours after staff were notified.

The oft-maligned holiday camp was evacuated because of flooding on New Year’s Day.

The once popular holiday destination was opened in 1970 at a cost of £2.5m. It hosted members of the British Military in 2020 as they were deployed to assist healthcare workers in stopping the spread of Covid-19.
