Ainsdale Beach was temporarily closed this morning after the discovery of suspected unexploded wartime ordnance.
Emergency services and Green Sefton took the decision to close the beach including the Shore Road entrance.
While the beach has now partially reopened, a significant portion remains cordoned off.
Shortly before midday, Sefton Council confirmed: “Police are currently evacuating Ainsdale Beach due to the discovery of wartime ordnance.
“We are asking people to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident.”
Local residents and visitors to Ainsdale Beach are advised to heed the instructions of authorities and avoid entering the restricted areas until further notice.
Some sections of Ainsdale Beach have reopened, but a “significant area” remains closed to the public, an eyewitness reported to OTS News.
