Smart devices like smartphone-controlled heating and sensor-enabled lighting are steadily growing in popularity across the UK. Statista forecasts predict that the market will double between 2022 and 2026, reaching 25.4 million user and nearly 85% household penetration in that year.
But why is the market heating up rapidly, and what sorts of devices are consumers finding most desirable? Global tech company, OKdo, recently carried out research to find out.
Why smart homes are becoming more popular
There are some key drivers behind the skyrocketing demand for smart devices. There are more products available than ever, at much-lower prices than they have been historically, offering improved connectivity and ease-of-use than ever before. Smart tech has entered its everyman stage.
Importantly though, smart devices are seen as adding value to a property. OKdo’s research found that, on average, UK residents are prepared to spend £9,000 more for a smart home when searching for a property.
The extra Brits would be willing to pay for smart homes varies. London comes in first with a willingness to pay 69% more than the average £9,200. Durham (58%), Wolverhampton (46%), Newcastle (31%) and Birmingham (22%) follow in this list.
What are Brits’ favourite smart technologies?
Whether they’re sold as out-of-the-box technologies from big brands, or created with single-board computers like ROCK, there are lots of smart home technologies to choose from. But which are the most popular in the UK?
- Smart security system
59% of the respondents considered a smart security system as an appealing feature for their new home. This includes technologies like smart doorbells, sensor-activated cameras and lighting, and pressure pad sensors.
- Smart heating system
A smart heating system that automatically adjusts the room temperature is another popular feature, with 50% of the respondents saying they would love to have one in their new home. Smart heating systems can help save on heating during the coldest seasons – and are likely growing in popularity as the cost-of-living crisis bites.
- Smart detectors
Safety is also one of the top priorities for Brits, with 47% of people saying that they would invest in smart detectors for smoke and carbon monoxide. These smart devices are connected to your smart home hub via Wi-Fi, as well as your smartphone, giving you that extra layer of safety.
4: Smart beds
Smart beds that self-adjust and can improve your sleep are also rising in popularity, with 42% of the respondents expressing their favour to this new gadget. If you suffer from poor sleep, being able to tailor plenty of aspects of your bedding could be the ticket to a silent night.
