Two Phone Call Scams

“Just had a very plausible gentleman calling himself Malcolm Brown from Bankline Fraud Operations on the phone. He told me my card had been used for 3 transactions today in Manchester, totalling £7000. The people using the card were still in Argos in the Trafford Centre and the Fraud Operations needed to verify with me that I had not given anyone my card. When I voiced my suspicions he even told me to give him my mobile number, as my landline does not have caller display, and he would ring me from the number displayed on my debit card, which would show up on caller display and prove he was calling from the card provider. I wouldn’t give him my mobile number. He said that a man was actually using my card in Argos at that minute and I needed to give him my card long number so he could stop the transaction immediately. I put the phone down and rang my bank. It was a scam, of course, but I cannot tell you how very, very plausible he was. Please share as much as possible.”

There is a suggestion that phone calls are being made from a 01484 number. The caller tells the recipient of the call that their computer is about to be hacked and software needs installing at a cost and asks for bank details from the recipient. Be wary of any messages of a similar nature sent from any phone number or where the number is withheld.
