A recent report on the salaries of top council bosses across Southport has led to falls for more accountability.

some are earning over £150,000 a year.

Perhaps we need to look at the workload of these officials more closely to find out how they earn their crust.

One resident said, “It seems to me that most seem to flutter from one meeting to another, carrying a collection of imposing looking folders.”

“They appear to benefit from plenty of perks, plenty of holidays and the inevitable golden handshake at the end of it. Very cushy!

“Should they make a blunder, they are given gardening leave, often long enough to manage the Crown Estates, then, after a decent spell off work, they go to another position, on an even bigger salary.

Which would you prefer? a clutch of chief executives, or a squad of workmen sweeping the streets, or repairing potholes?”

Higher wages than the PM

Margaret Carney, for example, was once reported to make more money than the UK’s Prime Minister. In January 2009 with an annualised salary of £150,894, Carney beat the Prime Minister’s £142,500 salary. Including expenses and pension contributions, she was said to have received a total of £176, 465 from the local authority in 2009/10.

Is this acceptable for just one council operative, or is it an appalling waste of essential funds?
