5 Common Factors That May Affect Female Fertility

20th April 2021

There are many reasons why you may find yourself in need of the services of a fertility specialist. Whether you are looking for IVF treatment from Fertility Plus, or researching ways to boost your natural fertility, you will be wondering about the cause of your infertility. Whilst answering such a question can be difficult and complex, there are five common factors that may affect female fertility. They are some of the factors that most women find themselves up against at the start of their fertility journey. Let’s take a look at them now.

1.Age

There is no need to think that having a baby beyond the age of thirty, or even forty, is impossible. However, the fact is that once you hit your 30s, your body starts to change and prepare itself for the next stage of your life. If you are passionate about having a family, then it is important to explore your fertility at a younger age as this will tell you if you need to allow for extra time when it comes to becoming a parent. That said, there are plenty of ‘mature’ mothers out there, and there is support for those looking for assisted conception.

2.Smoking

We all know that smoking is bad for our general health, and many people have now made the decision to quit. If you are a smoker and looking for motivation, then the possibility that your bad habit is having a negative effect on your fertility may well be enough to get you to stub out the cigs! Testing has shown that women who smoke are more likely to encounter fertility issues because it is thought that smoking may age and deplete egg stores prematurely.

3.Endometriosis

For some women, endometriosis has already caused them a great deal of pain and heartache even before they tried to conceive. For others, it is not until they encounter infertility that they are diagnosed. The often painful condition sees scar tissue adhere to the lining on the womb and fallopian tubes before, during and after menstruation. Often treated through laparoscopic surgery, endometriosis does not mean that you cannot have children, but it is one of the leading causes of female infertility in the UK.

4.Hyperprolactinemia

This condition sees the overproduction of prolactin in the body. Prolactin reduces estrogen and this can lead to infertility. Hyperprolactinemia is closely linked to the pituitary gland, and is often associated with medication taken for disorders concerning this area of the body.

5.Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

POS involves the growth of multiple cysts on the ovaries. Often detected when natural conception has failed, it is an illness that many women are unaware that they have. That said, it can also be painful and cause unexplained bleeding, so some women are already aware of it before they know it to be the cause of their infertility.

None of the factors in our list need to stop you from dreaming of having family. It may just be the case that you need a little extra help when it comes to making your dream a reality. Of course, living a healthy and active lifestyle is always a good thing when it comes to our health, and that is true when trying to conceive.
