Contractors’ ‘Cock-up’ Led to Rotten Row Flooding

21st November 2019

A Mistake by contractors building new homes at the end of Warren Court, Westcliffe Road, is the reason for the worsening flooding on Southport’s Rotten Row.

Town Centre Councillor Tony Dawson learned this from United Utilities yesterday on a visit to check the situation. The contractors have bee identified by UU as having broken a drain during the construction of the new homes and know they have to take speedy steps to put things right.

In the meantime, a UU flushing wagon is making a daily trek from Warrington to Birkdale to pump to take pressure off. The flooding has been affecting some nearby homes as well as affecting the dip in Rotten Row which has always been susceptible to flooding when it rains a lot but has recently been impassable at times.

Councillor Dawson has longer-term concerns about flooding in this part of Rotten Row. He has put down a formal question to the Council skiing for clear identification of the share of responsibility for putting things right between the Sefton Council and United Utilities.

“I would hope both authorities could work together to put right this recurrent problem,” he says. “This is an important route into town from Ainsdale and West Birkdale. It is also a gateway for many visitors to the town and a route for visitors to Victoria Park.”
